SUICIDE PREVENTION AUSTRALIA (SPA) is a non-profit, non-government organisation working as a public health advocate in suicide prevention. SPA is the only national umbrella body active in suicide prevention throughout Australia, promoting:
- Community awareness and advocacy
- Collaboration and partnerships between communities, practitioners, research and industry
- Information access and sharing
- Local, regional and national forums, conferences and events
We are currently recruiting a Treasurer onto the Board of Directors. This is a challenging role for someone willing to step up and develop a new skill set and experience in a dynamic environment. This is a pro-bono role; therefore no remuneration will be paid. However, basic expenses will be covered to attend face-to-face meetings and SPA events.
AUTHORITY/RESPONSIBILITY:
The Board of Directors is the legal authority for Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) Inc. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
CPA/CA qualified and experience in finance or accounting role. Preferably completed one year of Board membership term and have the ability to read, understand and interpret financial statements.
TERM:
The Treasurer is appointed by the Board to serve a one year term. This, however, could be extended if both parties agree.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Commitment to the work of the organization
- Knowledge and skills in finance (essential), board governance, policy, programs and personnel
- Attendance at bimonthly Board teleconference meetings
- Attendance at bimonthly Executive teleconference meetings
- Attendance at up to three face-to-face Board meetings in a year
- A time commitment of five hours a month, (includes preparation, meeting, committee and meeting time)
- Attendance at Annual General Meeting and SPA Members & Policy Forum
- Be informed of the services provided by Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) Inc. and publicly support them
- Prepare for and participate in the discussions and the deliberations of the Board
- To foster a positive working relationship with other Board members, and the general staff
- Be aware and abstain from any conflict of interest
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Assist the Board to establish strategic direction and policy for Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) Inc. in meeting the needs of the community
- Ability to read/understand/Interpret financial statements for Board members
- Chair the Audit Committee
- A signing authority on behalf of the Board for financial matters
- Ensure audited financial statements are presented to the Board on an annual basis
- Calls the motion at Annual General Meeting to appoint the Auditor
- Act as a resource to other committees
- Adhere to general duties outlined in the Board member job description
REVIEW/APPROVAL DATE:
- Annually reviews the Treasurer’s job description. Recommended changes are presented to the Board.
