Supervising Driver - Mentor

L2P provides support to young people who do not have access to a vehicle or family member able to help them acquire the minimum 120 hours of driving experience necessary to sit for the Probationary licence test. L2P aims to assist young learners to drive in a safe and lawful manner and increase their prospects of finding employment.

Supervising Drivers or mentors supervise practice sessions in a vehicle supplied by the program and ensure that the learner completes their log book correctly as they gain experience in a range of driving conditions including night driving. This practice is intended to make young drivers more competent and safer on the roads and reduce their over-representation in motor vehicle accidents.

Volunteers must be 25 years and over and have a full (non-Probationary) current Victorian driver's licence with a good driving history (less than 6 current demerit points). Volunteers need to be mature models of safe and responsible driving, enjoy engaging with young people and be willing to develop their communication skills with this cohort.

Volunteers would be required to supervise at least one driving practice session per week over 6 months or longer if possible.

Prospective volunteers must complete an application form providing at least two referees, undergo relevant security checks* including Working with Children, Victoria Police and  VicRoads driving history check and attend an interview with the Program Coordinator.

All volunteer Supervising Drivers undergo a VicRoads training course (10 – 12 hours) prior to being matched with a young person. All learner drivers receive a number of professional driving lessons both prior to commencing practice sessions with a Supervising Driver and as they progress through the stages of learning to more complex driving situations.

Supervising Drivers receive feedback and support from professional driving instructors and the Program Coordinator throughout the program.

*Applicants must supply passport photos only. Fees paid by L2P.
