About the role
Who we are – OIC: The Cambodia Project
OIC is the country’s first dedicated program bringing speech therapy to Cambodia. OIC refers to a moment of understanding, when something becomes clear. Oh! I see. It makes sense now. This represents the basis of speech therapy – communication and understanding.
Speech therapy aims to treat people with communication and swallowing disorders. In Cambodia, there are more than 600,000 people who require access to speech therapy who are unable to receive this basic service. Despite this, there are no Cambodian university trained speech therapist, no awareness of the problem at government or community level and no specific funding to tackle the issue.
What we’ve done and where we’re going
So far, we’ve run a pilot program in speech therapy in Siem Reap, the first of its kind in Cambodia. The aim is to see whether or not speech therapy can work in Cambodian context, using Cambodia language. Following an evaluation of the pilot program the next stage will be to scale up the program to cover more provinces in Cambodia. We’re also starting to plan a university speech therapy course.
Why we are looking for you
OIC is making headway in developing trainings for Cambodians in speech therapy. Our team is growing in both the employee and volunteer department. We value the ability to support our team members in their roles with OIC and a skilled volunteer in human resources would be able to assist us with doing this better.
