About the role

Our partner works in the sectors of environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture. Specifically, they work with small scale subsistence farmers in Central America to preserve tropical forests by way of sustainable agriculture practices.

Since 1997, the organisation have provided local, long-term technical assistance and training to rural farming families in Central America. Their model equips and empowers low-income farmers with the resources to implement alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture, sustain the land for future generations of farmers, halt tropical deforestation, and build strong, self-supporting communities through agribusiness.

To accomplish their mission, our partner’s local field trainers work with families, individuals, and communities for an average of five years using a five-phase approach. Each family that chooses to participate in their program receives frequent, technical assistance from their field trainer. Visits and trainings are tailored to each participant’s goals, preferences, and abilities. In order to graduate to the next phase, participants must demonstrate that they are ready.

The organisation reached out to us seeking accounting and financial software implementation support in its Honduras and Panama Field Program office.  Specifically, the offices hope to leverage the knowledge and experience of an accountant to help the transition of bookkeeping and accounting practices from Excel to QuickBooks financial software.   Currently all budgetary information, including budget vs. actuals, is captured on large Excel spreadsheets and sent electronically to the headquarters office in the United States for monthly review. As the organization continues to grow, strengthen, and formalize its processes – transitioning current accounting practices in each Field Office to QuickBooks is a top-priority in an effort to ensure transparency and accountability.

Your role as the first AfID volunteer will include a full implementation of QuickBooks by the end of a 3 week timeframe in each of the offices (Honduras and Panama); train the Program Administrator, Country Director & Small Business Coordinator to have working knowledge of program; writing a manual and reviewing and understanding of current accounting/operational expenses tracking procedures.

The organisation will be able to cover the cost of flights and accommodation. Please note that this role requires a Spanish speaker.
