Cancer Council Legal Referral Service Summer Internship Program

The Cancer Council Legal Referral Service (CCLRS) is offering 10 volunteer summer internships in January and February 2012. Internships will run for a month, and interns will work 3 days per week (days are flexible).

About the CCLRS

The CCLRS assists cancer patients and carers across NSW to access legal services, when they would otherwise be unable to do so, because of cost, illness or other barriers. Our partner firms generously donate their time to assist cancer patients and their families with a range of legal matters on a pro bono basis.

About the role

Interns will get hands-on experience in the delivery of legal services to disadvantaged clients. You will have primary responsibility for contacting clients to take instructions, and preparing written reports to brief external lawyers.

You will develop a range of skills including client interviewing, legal research, fact investigation and analysis and legal drafting.  You will also have exposure to relationship management and marketing activities, as well as technical training in a number of areas of law.

Essential selection criteria

  • Currently undertaking a tertiary qualification in law
  • Very high level written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders
