About the role

A Board Member position is a voluntary casual position based at the Focal Extended Incorporated (Focal) Community Centre at Canning St, North Ipswich Queensland 4305.

Focal has adopted The Carver model of corporate governance, which was developed by John Carver in the USA to provide a structure and leadership strategy, especially for non-profit and public organisations. The model seeks to enable the governing body of an organisation to:

  • focus on larger issues;

  • delegate with clarity;

  • manage and support the executive’s contribution without meddling;

  • effectively evaluate the accomplishment of the organisation; and

  • truly lead the organisation.

According to the model, the committee’s role is to represent the membership and to have the strength to listen to many viewpoints, weigh the relevant values and make sound decisions.  Each decision must be, in the committee’s independent judgment, one of faithfulness to the ownership. The tasks of a governing committee (as against an advisory one) are to ensure that:

  1. there is an authoritative and effective link between an organisation's owners (in Focal’s case, the membership) and the operational arm of the organisation;

  2. the values that drive the organisation are relevant, explicit and accessible, and;

  3. the actual performance of the organisation matches the identified goals.
