Matrix on Board specialise in providing financial management, management support, training and financial education to non-profits and social enterprises across Australia. Matrix on Board Training was established in late 2009 specifically to build on our experience of providing training programs in financial literacy to non-profit organisations.

Matrix on Board Training offers a wide range of courses including online training programs, international training, “Boost Breakfast” workshops and face-to-face training sessions.

We want every non-profit and social enterprise to make a positive and sustainable impact on their community. Understanding Financial Reports and Auditors Statements for Non Profit Organisations

This workshop has been delivered to over 2000 non-profit managers and Board members around Australia. Through the day, the workshop addresses the concepts behind accounting, and the roles of bookkeepers, accountants, auditors.                            

The workshop includes practical exercises, and covers what non-profit decision makers need to know to make effective decisions. The workshop presents the material in a non accounting way, and promises thatparticipantswill‘get’thepointoftheBalanceSheetandhowtoreadone!

The course is intended to assist staff and management committees to:

  • Understand the difference between accrual vs. cash accounting
  • See how accrual accounting impacts on revenue and expenditure
  • Understand what provisions are and what impact they have on expenditure, liabilities and the organisation’s financial viability
  • Understand the basics of budget development and monitoring
  • Prepare and be able to read financial reports, including the Balance Sheet and Income and Expenditure Statement
  • Understand the terminology used in and elements of a financial statement (e.g. assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenditure)
  • Discuss the legal obligations of staff and Boards when making financial decisions, and the role of financial statements
  • Identify the accountabilities of the Board and Manager
  • Understand the terminology used in the auditor’s reports, and discuss the role of the auditor and how to better work with the auditor
  • Learn some of the implications of taxes for non-profits (eg.GST, FBT, PAYG)
