Registry To Launch New Charity Web Domains

The Public Interest Registry, the global Not for Profit operator of the  ‘dot org’ domain, is set to launch two new web domains .ngo and .ong that will be available for registration in Australia from the start of October.            

According to the Public Interest Registry, the new web domains will help Australian Not for Profits build their online presence and establish trust and credibility as members of the global non-governmental organisation (NGO) community.

“The launch of the .ngo and .ong domains is part of the biggest change in the history of the Internet – the introduction of more than 1,300 new top-level domains (TLDs) over the next two years,” Public Interest Registry marketing coordinator Megan Soffer said.

“Public Interest Registry has more than a decade of experience operating a trusted, secure domain for the noncommercial community with .org.

“After extensive research and consultation with the global NGO community, it was a natural decision to take our mission of serving the public interest a step further with the .ngo and .ong domains. These new domains will help Australian nonprofits gain credibility on a global stage like never before.”

The Public Interest Registry said many Australian Not for Profits and NGOs used the .org.au domain.  and the new domains will help them to gain recognition across the globe as a genuine NGO, providing a comprehensive domain solution comprising of both the .ngo and .ong name registrations, a listing in Public Interest Registry’s global NGO directory, and access to a robust community portal.

They said the searchable global directory included a customisable online profile, enabling organisations to showcase their cause and communicate with partners, funders and the public.                                

Public Interest Registry says it will manage a validation process to ensure that only genuine NGOs are granted .ngo|.ong addresses and are included in the global directory.
