Online Tool Integrates Pledges for Charities

An Australian online startup has created a free online tool to help charities connect with supporters and promote campaigns via social media.

PledgeWidget is a free tool that charities can integrate with their websites to run online pledges.

It has been launched by the people behind PromiseLocker, a website where anyone can record their own promises and the promises made by others.

PromiseLocker co-founder Chris Noone said the company had looked at the technology they had created and decided it was relatively simple to create a tool that would enable charities to run effective online pledges.

“Many online campaigns run by charities simply record the names of people supporting a cause or fundraising target,” he said.

“They do not leverage social media to spread the campaign message or re-engage people with the pledge over time. People make a pledge and that is the end of the interaction.

“Just after we launched we spoke to a few charities about how they were using online to support campaigns and fundraising efforts and we quickly realised that a lot of the online implementations were pretty basic and we thought we could do much better, even if it was a diversion from our business plan.”

When a person makes a pledge using PledgeWidget their photo is immediately added to a page of people who have made the pledge. The pledge is automatically shared via Facebook and can also be shared via Twitter and email.

The person who made the pledge is regularly prompted to update their pledge progress and this provides further opportunities for the campaign message to be shared via social media .

“The wording of the pledge can be fully specified by the charity. PledgeWidget can be easily integrated into the charity’s website,” Noone said.

“No programing skills are required. The actual pledge and photos of people who have taken the pledge appear on the charity’s website so it adds a strong sense of community and participation.

‘We have made PledgeWidget available for free for charities and we will also provide free support to assist with integration into a website,” Noone said.
