Social Enterprise Guide for Young Australians

The Foundation for Young Australians’ has launched a Social Enterprise Guide for Young Australians with the help of Lauren Oliver, Director of the Fifteen Foundation and Jools Oliver, wife of high profile chef Jamie Oliver.

Social enterprise is an emerging and growing area with the success of high profile business ventures such as Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Restaurants, where young people have taken up the opportunity to gain experience and training.
Lauren Oliver says social enterprises like Fifteen can change public perceptions of disadvantaged groups by giving them the training and support to become the professional faces of professional services.
She says the impact this can have on the individuals involved is immeasurable: raised self-esteem, capacity to earn and provide for themselves, independence, confidence... the list goes on.
Now there is a guide to getting the best out of social enterprise.
The Social Enterprise Guide has an interactive format (a CD-Rom is included) to assist young people develop, design and successfully implement a vision into a social enterprise.

The Guide provides tools, tips and advice by giving an overview of current practices, what has worked and why, case studies, exercises and worksheets.

Vickie Burkinshaw, co-writer of the Guide says social enterprise provides a pathway to both social and economic development of local and global communities and the aim is that that young people will provide leadership in the emergence of this model of business.

She says social enterprise will continue to grow in Australia as more communities and businesses realise the benefits of social enterprise in developing sustainable communities.
