Forget-me-knot Day

Forget-Me-Knot campaign aims to encourage national conversation supporting those who’ve experienced child abuse in all its forms. ASCA is calling on all Australians to help adult survivors reconnect with their families, friends and communities by visiting www.asca.org.au to donate.

On Forget-me knot day annually ASCA asks all Australians to unite in support of the more than 2 million Australian adults surviving child abuse.

Communities from around the country held events, large and small where survivors and community members came together uniting in support of adults surviving child abuse.

Forget-me-knot Day for 2011 will be Saturday 19 November, but we are planning a whole week of activities in from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 November.

For the third year in a row, ASCA has managed to secure Hyde Park Barracks for Forget-me-knot day 2011.

This year’s campaign will feature a range of activities around the country including:

  • The unraveling of a mammoth knot on several historic buildings including Sydney’s Hyde Park Barracks
  • An official public Forget-Me-Knot ceremony at Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney, November 19th, 10AM, including speeches from politicians (TBC), ASCA Head of Stakeholder Relations, Dr. Cathy Kezelman and other special guests
  • A Forget-Me-Knot Fundraiser Dinner (TBC)
  • A Canberra event and call to all Australian politicians in State and Federal Parliament to support the day by wearing a knot – (TBC)
  • A call to religious groups, churches and leaders to hold a service in support of adult survivors and a minute’s silence on Sunday November 20th in support of those in their community who have been abused in any setting

Why Forget-me-knot Day?

Forget Many people forget that adults who were abused as children often need help to do those things others take for granted. Some don’t even realise. Childhood abuse in all its forms profoundly affects the developing brain, arresting emotional development and our ability to make healthy choices. Sadly for many survivors it’s not just a matter of getting over it!

Me Many survivors suffer from low self-esteem. ASCA works to empower survivors, encouraging nurture and self-care while establishing a healthy support network.

Knot When children are abused they become confused. Even for adults, life can be chaotic and tangled. ASCA wants all Australians to work together to untangle the knot of child abuse and to support survivors.

Get involved

You might like to get involved to raise awareness and/or funds so ASCA can continue its important work. Last year we had library displays, faith based services, open gardens, community picnics and information stalls in various places around Australia. We also mailed politicians around the country with knots and literature about the needs of Australian adults surviving child abuse. You might wish to hold a similar event this year or have other suggestions of what you can do this year.To read more click on the links on the left of this page.
