Amnesty International hosts top speakers at Brisbane Human Rights Conference

Amnesty International will hold its biggest ever Human Rights Conference in Brisbane from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 October 2011, as the organisation marks 50 years of defending freedom and justice.

Under the theme, ‘Change the World’, Amnesty International has assembled an impressive array of top speakers and human rights defenders to lead a series of lectures and workshops.  These include:

• Salil Shetty, Amnesty International Secretary General

• The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, former President of the International Commission of Jurists and retired judge of the High Court of Australia

• Rebiya Kadeer, World Uyghur Congress President 

• Mary Kostakidis, journalist and member of the recent National Human Rights Consultation Committee

• Julian Burnside AO QC, human rights lawyer, author and past President of Liberty Victoria

• Professor George Williams, Anthony Mason Professor and Foundation Director of the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law at UNSW

• Justine Nolan, Senior Lecturer at UNSW and Deputy Director, Australian Human Rights Centre

• Professor Raimond Gaita, Foundation Professor of Philosophy at the Australian Catholic University and Professor of Moral Philosophy at King's College London

• Stephen Keim SC, human rights lawyer and President of Australian Lawyers for Human Rights

• Andrew Erueti, Coordinator, Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Amnesty International
