Mission / Objective
- Protecting Wildlife…We protect vulnerable native species by monitoring local fauna populations with the help of the community and carrying out habitat re-vegetation programs.
- Influencing choice…We influence local, state and federal governments to ensure the protection of our state’s natural heritage by initiating campaigns, petitions and submitting ideas. We educate communities through workshops, events and publications.
- Engaging communities…Our network of almost 20 branches across QLD provides a grassroots approach to conservation with many community projects such as tree planting and fauna and flora surveys. We encourage the community to appreciate and protect local species and their habitat.

Projects in Progress
We are involved in the most important conservation decisions in the State. The Great Sandy Region, which includes Fraser Island and Cooloola National Park, survived mining and development proposals as a result of our recommendations. We pioneered the campaign to protect the Great Barrier Reef, and were it not for our efforts, this fascinating underwater world might not be there for all to enjoy. We also have potentially turned The Richmond Birdwing butterfly away from extinction by plantingtheir larval host plant, the Pararistolochia praevenosa vine, across South East Queensland.
Recently, our hands-on community projects collate information on Echidna, platypus, Quoll, Glider, Mangrove to identify where conservation actions are needed, now and in the future. We are also involved in conversations about coal seam gas, mining on north Stradbroke Island, the protection of the Coral Sea and the extension of the Queensland Marine Park.
Our magasine, the Wildlife Australia Magazine has been at the forefront of environmental publishing since our first issue in 1963. Throughout Queensland, interstate and internationally, this high quality nature journal, highlighted by award-winning photography, reaches thousands of readers through schools, universities, libraries, tourist resorts, wildlife parks as well as through personal subscriptions and newsagents.
