Walter & Eliza Hall Institute

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is Australia's first medical research institute and is now home to more than 650 researchers who are working to understand, prevent and treat diseases including blood and breast cancers, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease and malaria. Currently, more than 60 clinical trials based on discoveries made at the institute are underway. These include trials of a new class of drugs for treating cancer, and trials of vaccines for type 1 diabetes, coeliac disease and malaria.

Translation: to convert our discoveries into improvements in disease diagnosis, prevention and treatment.

Education: to develop and enrich the skills and experience of students and staff, allowing each person to realise their potential and contribute to a vibrant campus.

Engagement: to engage with the community and develop support for medical research generally and institute's mission specifically.

Sustainability: to build an infrastructure, funding and research capacity that enables the institute to fulfil its mission in a sustainable manner.

Disease Research Focus:

Cancer: Breast Cancer, Leukaemia and Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma

Chronic inflammatory diseases: Coeliac Disease, Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Transplantation

Infectious diseases: Malaria and Chronic Infectious Diseases
