Very Special Kids

For the past 25 years, Very Special Kids has been supporting families throughout their experience of caring for children with life-threatening illnesses, from diagnosis through to recovery or bereavement. Currently over 850 Victorian families of children with a life-threatening illness access the unique services provided by Very Special Kids. Families are supported holistically, through a range of physical, emotional, social and spiritual support. The family determines the pace and plays a key role in the types of services provided. Very Special Kids takes a strengths-based, family-centered approach. Current programs include counselling, a bereavement support program, hospital visiting, in-home support, sibling programs, networking opportunities for families and care at Very Special Kids House, Australia’s first and Victoria’s only hospice for children, offering respite, transition and end-of-life care. There is no charge to families for Very Special Kids services.

Mission / Objective

All families of children with life-threatening illnesses are able to access quality services that meet their needs.

Annual Report:

Projects in Progress

Over the last 3 years Very Special Kids has undertaken a comprehensive review of the model of care and services provided to families. One of the main objectives was to build on the existing strengths of the organisation and continue to develop a model of care that is sustainable, effective and accountable. As this review nears completion in 2010 one of the major recommendations to be achieved will be the completion of the implementation of a new 'Client Information management System' by 30 June 2010.

Other support

2010 is shaping up to be a great year for Very Special Kids. This year we celebrate 25 years of providing essential services and programs to families who care for children with life-threatening illnesses.

However this would not be possible without the generous support of individuals, companies, Trusts and Foundations and the community.

In 2010 we will be providing our services to over 850 families. This includes access to Very Special Kids House and programs such as sibling programs, counselling family activities and a bereavement support program.
