Sacred Heart Mission

Mission / Objective

Sacred Heart Mission's vision is of a world where people live free from poverty and belong to a community that is compassionate, just and inclusive of all. To this end, we provide a diverse range of services that address homelessness and disadvantage by ensuring people have access to necessities - including housing, food and health care - and enabling people to connect with their community and develop support networks that sustain and nurture their lives.

Every day hundreds of people receive support and assistance from the Mission in St Kilda. The cornerstone of the Mission is the Dining Hall which provides breakfast and lunch free every day of the year - over 4,000 breakfasts and over 10,500 three-course hot lunches every month. We also provide housing assistance, clothing, counselling, food parcels, emergency financial support, women's services, sports and recreational activities and drug and alcohol support. The Mission operates aged care facilities that provide permanent accommodation for 83 people, a rooming house for 67 people and crisis
accommodation for women.

Beneficiary Group

People who are homeless, disadvantaged or living in poverty. We began by opening the doors to whoever needed our assistance in 1982 and we continue that today.

Projects in Progress

Sacred Heart Mission has numerous projects and programs operating.  Two specific ones are the Journey to Social Inclusion (J2SI) which is a three year pilot project with the aim of ending chronic homelessness.  The project began in November 2009.

We also have an apprentice chef project which operates out of our dining hall.  We employ three people who will be working part-time and gradually increasing to full time over a four-five year period.  The apprentices will have a history of homelessness and long term unemployment. Not only will they be receiving knowledge, skills and employment history they
will also be enabling the Mission to provide the 350 three course lunches it produces every single day of the year.

Wills and Bequests

Bequests help provide the organisation with financial stability for the future.  Through the granting of a bequest you will be enabling the Mission to plan future activities and to be able to expand services due to the additional funding.  In the circumstances of an economic downturn, an invested bequest will ensure services do not have to be cut back if
funding is tight.

General Donations

Donations assist with the overall provision of services as not all of our services receive government funding and those that do it is only partial funding.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.  Our meals program can also take donations of food items.  We operate six op shops and they are always in need of items - the profits of the shops goes to funding programs.

Donations can be made online or calling 1800 4 HEART (1800 443 278).

Volunteering

We are reliant on volunteers to operate the dining hall every day and take individuals, community groups, school groups and corporate groups.  All people volunteering have to be over 16 years of age.

Our op shops are also always in need of volunteers.
