CEO

Professor Alison Venn, Acting Director

Professor Alison Venn completed her PhD in immunology at the National Institute for Medical Research in the UK. Following postdoctoral research in malaria immunology at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, she trained as an epidemiologist and spent ten years doing research on women's reproductive health at La Trobe University. Since joining the Menzies Research Institute in 2000 she has broadened her research interests to cover a range of chronic diseases. Professor Venn's current research interests are in the causes and prevention of chronic disease and in reproductive health. She has a particular focus on how lifestyle (smoking, physical activity, diet, alcohol consumption), obesity and hormones in childhood and early adulthood affect the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer later in life.

Wills and Bequests

Even beyond our lifetime, we can make a gift that can change lives. By creating a bequest in your will, you can contribute to better health for future generations. Whether the gift is small or large, for our family, friends, colleagues or someone in desperate need, a simple gesture can have a big impact on somebody's life - it could even save a life. Bequests made to Menzies have enabled us to make many advances in the fight against disease. No administrative costs are taken from bequests and 100 per cent of a bequest is used for the purpose of medical research.

General Donations

A donation to the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania offers the opportunity for our researchers to continue their groundbreaking work into discovering cures and treatments for diseases that affect our community. Our research focuses on a range of common diseases within the community including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, cardiovascular disease, leukaemia and lymphoma, cancer and depression. The generous support of the community is essential to the ongoing success of Menzies' research. Please consider making a gift today.

Volunteering

Research grant funding often falls short of the full costs of conducting a project, and volunteer support assists Menzies' researchers to carry out work that may not otherwise be achievable. The Menzies Research Institute Tasmania is fortunate to be able to call on the skills, knowledge and goodwill of volunteers, who take on many different roles to help the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania conduct its research. Our volunteers have opportunities to learn new skills, develop their confidence, assume responsibility, maintain social contacts, and contribute to research that addresses the health needs of Tasmanians. Menzies' staff highly value the contributions of our volunteers, as evidenced by the steady stream of requests for volunteer assistance.
