Mission / Objective

The Mental Health Research Institute (MHRI) is focused on understanding the cause and developing effective treatments for major mental disorders. Research programs are focused on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive illnesses, Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinsons Disease. Researchers are skilled in biochemistry, cell biology, genomics, proteomics, psychopharmacology, behavioural neuroscience and have clinical expertise. Based in Parkville, Melbourne MHRI is accredited as an independent medical research Institute by the National Health and Medical Research Council. It is affiliated with the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and Melbourne Health.

Projects in Progress

The Mental Health Research Institute (MHRI) is dedicated to improving the lives of one in five Australians who experience a mental illness. Our research teams investigate the causes of illnesses including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We aim to find better ways to diagnose and treat such illnesses, and ultimately, to discover preventions or cures.
