The Heart Research Institute is a national resource with an international reputation, a medical research institute that is independent and financially autonomous and undertaking world-class research into the world's biggest killer - heart disease.

The mission of The Heart Research Institute is the prevention of death and suffering from heart disease through an understanding of the biological processes that cause Atherosclerosis. Hardening of the arteries, or Atherosclerosis is a disease of the blood vessels which causes heart attacks and strokes and leads to almost 40% of total deaths of Australians.
