The Historic Houses Trust is a statutory authority within the Department of Premier and Cabinet of the NSW Government. It is one of the largest state museums in Australia and is entrusted with the care of key historic buildings and sites in New South Wales.
HHT was established in 1980 to conserve and administrate Vaucluse House and Elizabeth Bay House. It has now grown to manage 14 diverse sites and properties including magnificent houses, fine public buildings, a farm, gardens, parklands, a beach and urban spaces including World Heritage Listed sites. The HHT holds extensive collections in each of its properties and conducts a dynamic range of programs and activities attracting over two million visitors each year, including 60,000 children.
The HHT is governed by a Board of Trustees. Trustee appointments are made by the New South Wales Governor, on the recommendation of the Minister for Heritage.

Wills and Bequests
A special way of supporting the HHT and its vital work of preserving and sharing our built and cultural heritage is to leave a gift in your will, also known as a bequest or legacy. Through such a gift, donors will know the values and ideals they share with the HHT will live on – helping us create a future for our past.
All legacies, whether big or small make such a crucial contribution. They allow us to carry out conservation work at our properties, work on special projects and fund new acquisitions. No legacy income is spent on overheads or general administration - it is used right at the heart of our work.
If you are considering leaving a gift to the HHT please find below some further information below about where to direct your gift, types of gifts, making or changing a will & some suggested wording to take to your solicitor. Our HHT Foundation staff are always happy to help you with any queries you may have and we encourage you to discuss your ideas with your solicitor.

General Donations
Our Governors are the lifeblood of the Foundation. Their generous and sustained support allows the HHT to take on projects that simply wouldn’t otherwise be feasible. As we receive no direct funding for acquisitions in particular, HHT Governors are vitally important if we are to grow our collections and continue our extensive exhibition, acquisition and education programs.
Supported projects
With the support of the Foundation Governors, the HHT has:
- acquired rare and special furniture, artworks and artefacts that were once part of HHT properties
- saved and preserved ‘at risk’ pieces in HHT collections
- developed and enhanced the unique collection of the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection
- published award-winning books on Australian decorative arts, artists and social history
- undertaken extensive conservation works at HHT properties.
See the full list of projects supported by the Governors Program.
