Florey Neuroscience Institutes

Florey Neuroscience Insitutes (FNI) was formed in 2007 through an amalgamation of Howard Florey Institute, Brain Research Institute and National Stroke Research Institute. Internationally renowned scientists work with young researchers to make discoveries about the brain, undertaking applied and clinical research aimed at developing treatments and new medical practices to combat brain disorders. Their discoveries will improve lives of those affected by brain and mind disorders in Australia and around the world. Research areas include: Parkinson's disease, Stroke, Motor neuron disease, Huntington's disease, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, addiction, depression, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Schizophrenia, brain function and development.

Mission / Objective

Our Mission is to Improve life through brain research

Our Vision is to be recognised as a leading international brain research institute making a difference to the lives of those affected by brain diseases and disorders

Our values are innovation and excellence; commitment and passion; integrity and rigour; collaboration and teamwork.

Projects in Progress

Our research is segmented into nine divisions where our scientists research a range of disorders:

Behavioural Neuroscience - addiction, schizophrenia, Rett Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, cognitive neuroscience, autism, Huntington's disease, depression.

Brain Development & Regeneration - brain development, traumatic brain injury, stroke.

Epilepsy - epilepsy imaging, human brain structure and function, ion channells and disease, neurobiology of epilepsy.

Imaging - neuroimaging, MRI development, neuroinformatics.

Multiple sclerosis.

Neurodegeneration - neurogenetics, Motor neuron disease, Parkinson's disease, neuropharmacology.

Neuropeptides.

Stroke - basic sciences, imaging and ultrasound, public health and epidemiology, neuro-rehabilitation and recovery, AVERT - early intervention.

Systems Neurophysiology - brain regulation of body temperature; treatment of heart attack and heart failure; physiological changes in epilepsy.

Wills and Bequests

Over the past 50 years, bequests from our founders, staff and community supporters have created buildings and laboratories, supported research, and established student scholarships, bursaries and prizes.

  • Bequests to general research allow the Director to apply it to the most appropriate project and/or pressing need. They are placed into an endowment fund, thereby growing and delivering income in perpetuity.
  • A bequest can create named Fellowships and Scholarships which develop promising young scientists whilst honouring you or a loved one.
  • Bequests to specific research areas are spent at the time they are received, maybe to buy major new pieces of equipment or support a promising young scientist.

If you have already made a bequest to the Florey in your Will, please let us know so that we can thank you and invite you to join other bequestors as a member of The Brains Trust. We will keep you informed of our research achievements and we can ensure that your wishes are carried out and provide the greatest benefit to our research in the future.
