Mission / Objective
Our mission is to create caring and inclusive communities and a just society. We do this by delivering leading edge services, by finding innovative solutions to complex social challenges, and by helping to shape social policy. We work to: ensure that children are nurtured and safe with their families, free from abuse and neglect; give women a voice and support them to move on from domestic violence; help older people to live independently for as long as possible and to age with dignity and respect; create opportunities through our social leadership programs for people to lead change in their own communities.
Our purpose is to find effective responses to Australia’s most pressing social problems, and our vision is that every person is healthy, safe and connected.
Beneficiary Group
We provide services and support for women, children and families, older people, and carers.
Our work is focused in communities where disadvantage is entrenched and social isolation and exclusion perpetuate a range of issues such as neglect, domestic and family violence, limited access to services and support, substance abuse and mental illness. Our work touches the lives of thousands of Australians of all ages and backgrounds, driving our vision that that every person is healthy, safe and connected.
Projects in Progress
Keeping kids safe
The Benevolent Society works across the spectrum of early childhood services. We work with vulnerable families early in their child’s life to ensure foundations are laid for good health and developmental outcomes. This early intervention is crucial to breaking harmful and destructive cycles of parenting and behaviour. In families where there is history or risk of abuse or neglect, we ensure children are protected, safe and supported to heal.

Strong communities
Our efforts focus on building strong families and healthy communities. We're driving an innovative, long term community-building project in Bankstown, in Sydney's south west, called Growing Communities Together. It's a partnership with the whole community - families, youth, older people, businesses, schools and services - and is about working with the community to build its own capacity to face disadvantage and adversity and to drive positive social change.

Taste
'Taste' is part of Growing Communities Together. It's a suite of activities designed to showcase the multicultural food traditions of Bankstown and Greenacre. From walking tours to recipes to cooking classes, all our projects are designed to give something back to the local community. Our food tours are set up as a social enterprise and great ;foodie' experiences while also generating income for local businesses and creating jobs for local residents.

A good start for kids
As part of our vision to give Australian children the best possible start in life, The Benevolent Society has recently partnered with three other leading not-for-profit organisations in the largest social enterprise in the country. We have joined Social Ventures Australia, Mission Australia and the Brotherhood of St Laurence to create GoodStart, a new company that has purchased more than 600 ABC Learning Centres. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform childcare in Australia and focus on quality of care and educational outcomes, and to support the access and inclusion of disadvantaged children to quality child care.

Apartments for Life
In response to the unprecedented growth in Australia's ageing population, we're pioneering a new approach to delivering appropriate care and housing for older people: purpose-built apartments located around thriving community hubs that will allow older people to live independently for as long as possible and in the neighbourhood of their choice. It's called 'Apartments for Life' and will be built on our historic site in Bondi, in Sydney's east. We believe it will deliver considerable benefits for residents, older people and the local community, and will help transform the approach to aged care in Australia.
