Barnardos Australia

Mission / Objective

Barnardos deals with the prevention of childhood neglect and abuse and finding care for its victims. Our vision is that all children and young people will have caring families in which they can grow safely and fulfil their potential. Families and young people will be valued and supported by quality services and engaged communities. Our professional services work in partnership with parents and governments to prevent and reduce the effects of neglect, abuse, poverty and homelessness. Being at the forefront of child welfare service provision and embracing a tradition of innovative and holistic approaches we are able to assist Australian children and young people robbed of their most fundamental needs by those responsible for their well being. Barnardos Australia a true public benevolent institution in every sense as it not only is an Australian Public Company & Company Limited by Guarantee but also has PBI, with GST, FBT and Income Tax Exemption and has endorsement as a DGR.

Projects in Progress

Poverty can lead to homelessness and child neglect. Low-income families face special problems in managing money. Helping these families to manage is a central part of Barnardos family support work. Barnardos recognises the impact of financial stress on families and in particular children and young people within these families. Financial matters are often a sensitive issue to discuss - the Barnardos' Financial Literacy and Numeracy Project ('BFLIP') has been developed as a tool for educating social welfare workers in how to assist low income families with debt issues. In turn families with limited resources, are provided with education, training, valuable links and financial solutions to their individual situation. 'BFLIP' enables family support workers to assist families to; - Get the income to which they are entitled - Cope with annual bills and to budget for recurring expenses - Manage debt and obtain more specialised help - Avoid common consumer traps
